Is the Toyota Corolla Cross XRV worth it?

The Toyota Corolla Cross XRV, when launched, did not meet expectations, but the strong presence of the Toyota brand made it a notable figure on the streets.

One advantage of the Corolla Cross over its two main competitors, the Jeep Compass and the Volkswagen Taos, is that it is a flex hybrid electric vehicle.

This version is the most expensive, but it has a price comparable to the two rivals mentioned above that have only combustion engines.

We can say that the Toyota Corolla Cross XRV is a politically correct SUV when using ethanol.

It has a love-it-or-hate-it style, with a front that stands out in the crowd; however, this SUV was built on the same platform as the Corolla sedan.

Interior of the Corolla Cross XRV

The interior features rubberized upper door sections and a central strip, an armrest, and upholstery on the seats with a leather portion, but the top of the dashboard remains plastic.

We can highlight the outdated parking brake placed in the Corolla Cross, which requires the use of the left foot to operate.

As it is a top-of-the-line version, it is ideal that it already uses the electromechanical system.

Its wheelbase is 2.64m, which slightly reduces the interior space, especially for the rear passenger.

Its trunk is not one of the largest in the category, with only 440 liters of cargo capacity.

The air conditioning is dual-zone, with vents for the rear seat, the driver's seat is electric, it has a sunroof, and multimedia with an 8-inch screen.

Mechanics

There are three engines: one combustion engine with flex technology, delivering up to 101 horsepower with ethanol and 14.5 kg of torque, and two electric motors providing an additional 72 horsepower and 16.6 kg of torque, resulting in a combined power of 122 horsepower.

The two electric motors are housed within the CVT automatic transmission, allowing the three to work together automatically when needed.

It is worth noting that one of the electric motors transforms into alternator during decelerations or when activated by the combustion engine to recharge the battery.

O SUV The Corolla Cross has disc brakes on all four wheels that are regenerative and help recharge the batteries during braking.

All of this is controlled by an electronic central unit that makes transitions with great smoothness and silence, which is impressive even when driving on uneven surfaces.

Driving Dynamics and Performance

It features four driving modes:

  • Normal.
  • Power for maximum performance with the engines working simultaneously.
  • Eco privileged or electric mode for fuel savings.
  • EV for when the battery is fully charged, allowing to move for 2 km using only the battery's charge as long as there is no hard acceleration.

The gearbox has the D position, which works as engine brake and forces quick battery charging, ideal for long descents.

Its performance is considered quite reasonable, going from zero to sixty in eleven seconds with a maximum of 170 km per hour.

The great advantage of this set is the low fuel consumption, reaching 14.3 km/l on ethanol and 20.0 km/l on gasoline in the city/highway cycle.
